On-screen marking of answer scripts
Scanned answer scripts are uploaded in bulk and teachers mark them on the screen, page by page, with marks, remarks, ticks and a pen. A bundle is submitted only when every page was opened, and the family can later read the marked copy on the portal.
PLANSFrom Growth
Why it matters
Carrying bundles of answer scripts between the strong room and staff rooms is slow, and scripts get lost or are marked at home. A teacher can skip a page and nobody knows until a parent finds an unmarked answer. With SmartMy School the exam cell scans the scripts once. Each teacher marks them on the screen by dummy number, without ever seeing the student's name. The system will not take a bundle until every page of every script has been opened. When a family asks for a copy, they read the script with the teacher's marks on it from the portal. No visit to the office is needed.
The problem it solves
- Answer scripts travel between staff rooms and homes, and one bundle goes missing every exam season.
- A teacher misses an answer on page 9 and the student loses marks nobody noticed.
- Parents ask to see the corrected script, and the office spends days finding and photocopying it.
- The front sheet with the student's name sits on top of every script the teacher marks.
How it works
- Set Marking to "On screen, from scanned scripts" on the valuation scheme. Give dummy numbers and print the stickers as for any blind valuation.
- Scan the scripts. On the paper's Valuation tab press Upload Scanned Scripts: one file per script named by its dummy number (482913.pdf). Upload many at once or as a ZIP, or long scans split at every page that carries a dummy number sticker.
- The result says how many scripts were stored and what could not be placed. Scripts without a Scan lists the rest. A bundle is handed out only when every script in it has a scan.
- The teacher opens the bundle and presses Mark on Screen. The page is on the left; the scripts, the pages and the marks are on the right.
- A click on the page places a mark and a remark there. Tick and cross stamps take one click; the pen draws in red, green or blue; Strike Through crosses an unanswered page.
- Submit Bundle is refused until every page of every script was opened, and it names the pages still to open. The final marks then follow the scheme, as on paper.
Everything it does
Uploading the scans
- PDF, or pictures (JPG, PNG, BMP, TIFF; a TIFF of several pages gives them all). Pictures 482913_1.jpg, 482913_2.jpg become the pages of script 482913 in the order of their names
- Long scans: a new script starts at every page with a dummy number sticker (Code 128 barcode, printed from the paper's Valuation tab)
- The result lists what could not be placed: a name or barcode that is no script of the exam and pages before the first barcode. Also a file that is not a PDF or picture
- Uploading a script again replaces its scan; pages already opened stay opened
- Scans are kept in the account's media storage, never as a public link
The marking screen
- Zoom, previous and next page, and a button per page coloured by seen or struck through
- Marks and remarks placed on the page, shown as a badge and listed beside it; remarks in any language
- Tick and cross stamps; a pen for the mouse, a finger or a stylus, in red, green or blue, with undo and clear page
- Strike Through for an unanswered page; a page counts as seen once it was on the screen
- The total is typed on the right. With a question paper from the question bank, a mark per question and per sub-question, added by the system
Keeping the student hidden
- Front Pages Hidden on the scheme: the first pages (with the register number) are kept from everyone who values; 0 to start with
- More Pages Hidden on a script: further pages, such as the front sheet of an additional booklet (for example 9, 17-18)
- The exam cell and the student's copy still have every page
- A register number written on a page that is not hidden is shown: the sticker must cover it
Checks and revaluation on the same screen
- Check on Screen: the chief examiner reads the pages and gives a mark, question by question where the teachers did. They do so without seeing what the teacher placed
- Finish Check is refused until every page of every checked script was opened
- A revaluator gets a bundle of their own and marks it on the same screen, never seeing the first marks
- Scan with the Marks (exam cell): the scan with every mark, remark, stamp, pen stroke and strike-through drawn onto the pages, never the teachers' names
The student's copy
- The family asks for "A copy of the answer script" on the result page of the parent portal
- Once the exam cell completes the request, Read the answer script opens it in the page, with Download beside it
- Copy with the Marks on the scheme (on to start with): the copy carries the marks, remarks and pen strokes; off, the bare scan
- Only the family of that student gets the file
Time, limits and clean-up
- Time on screen per page and per script; a pause of more than five minutes is not counted
- Scripts per Evaluator per Day: a teacher starts no more than this many in a day; 0 (no limit) to start with
- Keep the Scans (months): scans are deleted that long after the last day of an exam whose results are published; 0 (kept) to start with
- Scans are never deleted while a revaluation, retotalling or copy request about that paper is open; the marks placed on the pages stay
- Reports: Marks on the Pages, Pages Read, Pages Read on Checking, Marks per Question on Checking
Who uses it
Exam in-charge (exam cell)Sets the scheme to on screen, uploads the scans, hands out bundles, sees the scan with every mark, and completes copy requests.
Teacher (evaluator)Marks each script on the screen, page by page, and submits the bundle.
Chief examinerChecks a share of each bundle on the screen.
Parent and studentAsk for a copy of the script and read or download it on the portal.
Where you use it
- Web: the paper's Valuation tab (Upload Scanned Scripts, Scripts without a Scan). Also Examination > Valuation > My Bundles (Mark on Screen) and Bundles to Check (Check on Screen). Also the reports under Examination > Reporting
- Parent portal: the result page, to ask for a copy and read or download it
- Not in the Campus app: marking is done in a browser, on a computer or a tablet
- Not a scanner: scan with the school's own scanner or copier to PDF or pictures

Questions
Do we need a special scanner?
No. Any scanner or copier that makes PDF or JPG files will do. Name each file by the dummy number, or scan many scripts in one go and let the dummy number sticker's barcode split them. Can a teacher skip a page?
Not without it showing. Submit Bundle is refused until every page of every script has been opened, and the message names the pages still to open. A blank page is struck through, and that counts too. Will the teacher see the student's name on the front sheet?
Not if you set Front Pages Hidden on the scheme, for example to 1. The first page is then kept from every teacher, checker and revaluator. The exam cell and the student's copy still have it.Can parents see the corrected answer script?
Yes, when they ask for a copy on the result page of the portal and the exam cell completes the request. They read it in the page or download it, with the teacher's marks and remarks on it unless you switch Copy with the Marks off.How long are the scans kept?
As long as you choose. Keep the Scans (months) deletes them that many months after the results are published, never while a request about the paper is open. Left at 0, they are kept.Related features
