Valuation of written papers
Answer scripts are marked blind, by dummy number, by one, two or more teachers who never see each other's marks. When their marks differ too much, a further evaluator or the chief examiner decides, and every mark given stays on record for revaluation.

Why it matters
In most schools the class teacher corrects the board-pattern papers of their own students and knows whose script it is. They enter one mark that nobody checks. When a parent questions a mark, there is no second opinion and no record of how it was reached. SmartMy School hides the student behind a six-digit dummy number. It can give every script to two teachers who work without seeing each other's marks. It sends a script to a third teacher or the chief examiner when the two differ by more than your limit. Every mark of every round is kept, so a revaluation starts from facts, not memory.
The problem it solves
- A teacher corrects the scripts of their own class and knows whose paper they are holding.
- One teacher marks hard and another marks easy, and the difference only shows when parents compare report cards.
- A parent asks for revaluation and nobody can show who marked the script or what was given first.
- The exam in-charge tracks which bundle is with which teacher on a sheet of paper.
How it works
- The exam in-charge picks a valuation scheme on the subject or the exam type, for example two evaluators with a third beyond 15 %. A paper without a scheme is marked the usual way.
- After the exam, on the paper's Valuation tab, press Give Dummy Numbers. Each student who wrote the paper gets a random six-digit number. Print Stickers to cover the register number, and Print Key for the exam cell's safe.
- Press Make Bundles. The scripts are mixed and cut into bundles of 30 (a setting). Name the evaluator and a due date on each bundle and press Hand Out.
- Each teacher opens Examination > Valuation > My Bundles, sees dummy numbers only, types a mark per script and presses Submit Bundle.
- When every round is in, the final mark is made by the scheme's logic, such as the average. A script beyond the limit goes into a further round or to the chief examiner.
- When every script is final, the paper's marks are written from the final marks. Moderation, grace, results and report cards follow as usual.
Everything it does
The valuation scheme
- Evaluators: how many people mark every script, each without seeing the others' marks (2 to start with; 1, 2, 3 or more)
- Scripts per Bundle: 30 to start with
- Deviation Limit: 15 % of the maximum to start with, or a number of marks; 0 means no limit
- Beyond the Limit: one more evaluator (the default) or the chief examiner, whose mark is final
- Final Mark: average of all (the default), the highest, the lowest, average of the closest two, the last one given or the median. Or highest and lowest dropped and the rest averaged
- Final Mark after a Further Round: average of the closest two to start with, or any of the same choices
- Rounding: up to the next whole mark (the default), to the nearest, or none
- Not the Students' Own Teacher: a bundle is refused to a teacher who teaches the subject to a student whose script is in it
- Three schemes come ready (two evaluators with a third beyond 15 %, two evaluators averaged, one evaluator by dummy number). None is set until you choose
Dummy numbers and bundles
- A random six-digit dummy number per script, unique in the exam
- Absent, exempted and not-eligible students get no script
- A malpractice script is held back until the exam cell uses Release for Valuation or cancels it
- Stickers with the dummy number and its barcode (Code 128), and a confidential key of register number, name and dummy number
- Scripts are mixed again for every round, and nobody is given a script they have already marked
Blind marking
- Whose script it is, the marks of every round and the final mark are readable only by the exam cell
- An evaluator sees only their own bundles and marks, by dummy number
- 0 is a mark; a script without a mark blocks Submit Bundle
- With a question paper from the question bank, marks are entered question by question and added by the system. The best N count where any N are answered, and sub-questions 5(a), 5(b) go one by one
Check by a chief examiner
- Check (% of a Bundle): a share of every submitted bundle is marked again by the bundle's Checked By. At least one script is picked at random. 0 to start with (no check)
- The checker sees dummy numbers, not the evaluator's marks
- Check Tolerance: 5 marks to start with; one checked script beyond it sends the whole bundle back to the evaluator with a new sample
- Nobody checks their own bundle; menu Valuation > Bundles to Check
Records and revaluation
- Every mark entered or changed is tracked: who, when, old and new
- A submitted bundle is reopened only by the exam cell, with a reason kept in its history
- The paper cannot be submitted or locked while a script is to be valued, beyond the limit or held back
- Revaluation is a round of its own, by a revaluator who never marked that script
- On Revaluation, on the scheme: the revised mark replaces the original (the default), or the higher of the two stands. Or the mark changes only beyond a difference (15 % of the maximum to start with)
- Retotalling: the corrected total replaces the mark, whatever the scheme says
Teachers from outside
- Valuation > External Evaluators: Create Login and Send Invitation. That login sees My Bundles only, by dummy number. It closes by itself when the last bundle is submitted
Parts of a paper
- Where a subject is examined in parts, a part such as theory takes its own scheme, scripts and rounds. A practical without a scheme is typed as before
Reports and pay
- Bundles list with scripts marked against the total
- Deviation List: each script with the marks of every round, the gap and the final mark
- Valuation by Evaluator: scripts marked and the average mark given, per subject and evaluator. You see who has work left and who marks hard or easy
- Configuration > Valuation Rates: a rate per script and another for a further round; amounts totalled per evaluator. A report only: nothing is paid from here
Who uses it
Exam in-charge (exam cell)Picks the scheme, gives dummy numbers, prints stickers and the key, makes and hands out bundles, releases held scripts and reopens bundles.
Teacher (evaluator)Marks the scripts of the bundles handed to them, by dummy number, and submits each bundle.
Chief examinerChecks a share of each bundle, or gives the final mark where the scheme says so.
PrincipalReads the Deviation List and Valuation by Evaluator to see how consistent the marking was.
Where you use it
- Web: Examination > Valuation (My Bundles, Bundles to Check, Bundles, Answer Scripts, External Evaluators), Configuration > Valuation Schemes and Valuation Rates. Reporting > Deviation List and Valuation by Evaluator, and the Valuation tab on a paper
- Not in the Campus app: valuation is done on the web; the teacher's app enters the marks of papers without a scheme
- Not on the parent portal: families see the published result, never the dummy numbers or the rounds
What you control
Settings
- Valuation scheme on the subject, else on the exam type; the paper takes it and it can be changed until valuation starts
- Evaluators: 2; Scripts per Bundle: 30; Deviation Limit: 15 % of the maximum; Beyond the Limit: one more evaluator
- Final Mark: average of all; after a further round: average of the closest two; Rounding: up
- Check: 0 % (off); Check Tolerance: 5 marks
- Not the Students' Own Teacher: off, switched on when a new scheme is given two evaluators
- On Revaluation: the revised mark replaces the original; difference for the third choice: 15 %
Approvals
- Revaluation request: a parent's or the office's revaluation goes through this chain before the review starts. One level of the exam cell by default, more levels if you add them
Notifications
- Revaluation Completed: to the student and parents when a revaluation request is completed. In the app inbox and by the first channel that reaches them (app push, WhatsApp, SMS or email), at once
- No notice goes to evaluators about bundles: they see them under My Bundles
Questions
Do we have to use double valuation for every subject?
No. A paper takes a scheme only where you pick one on the subject or the exam type. Unit tests can stay with the class teacher typing marks, while board-pattern term exams use one or two blind evaluators. Can a teacher find out whose script they are marking?
Not from the system. Evaluators see dummy numbers only; the key of register numbers is readable by the exam cell alone. Stick the dummy number sticker over the register number on the script. What happens when two teachers give very different marks?
If the gap is beyond the deviation limit (15 % of the maximum to start with), the script goes further. It goes to a third evaluator or to the chief examiner, as your scheme says. The Deviation List shows every such script with all its marks. Can we ask teachers from a nearby school to correct papers?
Yes. Add them as External Evaluators and create their login. They see only the bundles handed to them, by dummy number, and the login closes when their last bundle is submitted.Related features
