Route playback with a speed-coloured line

Replay where a vehicle went on any day, or on one of its runs, as a line coloured by speed. It is red where it was over your speed limit. Halts of two minutes or more and the alerts on the way are marked, with the time and speed at every point.
PLANSFrom Growth
Built and tested in code with a stand-in tracking server. Not yet run with real GPS units; tested with your first unit before go-live.

The problem it solves

  • A parent complains the bus was speeding on the highway, and you have no way to check.
  • The driver says the bus left on time, and the parents say it was late at the first stop.
  • A bus took a long detour or stood somewhere it should not have, and you hear about it a week later.
  • An alert came in at 7:42, and you cannot see where the bus was or how it was driven just before.

How it works

  1. Open Transport > Operations > Live Map and press Playback.
  2. Click a vehicle in the list and choose the day. The whole day is drawn. Or pick one of that day's runs to see only that run, from five minutes before it started to five minutes after it ended.
  3. The line is coloured by speed: light blue below 30 km/h, dark blue at normal speed, red at or above your Entity's Overspeed Above limit.
  4. Halts of two minutes or more are marked P, with how long and from when to when. Alerts in that period are red dots with their name and time.
  5. Press Play. A marker moves along the track at 10x to 300x real time (60x to start with); or drag the slider. The time and the speed at the marker are shown.
  6. Under the controls: the kilometres, the top speed, the number of halts and the number of alerts for the period.
  7. From Transport > Operations > Trips, press Play Back on any trip to open it here with the trip's times.

Everything it does

What you choose

  • The vehicle, from the same list as the live map, with search
  • The day (in your Entity's time zone)
  • Whole day, or one of the runs the vehicle started that day
  • Play speed: 10x, 30x, 60x, 120x or 300x

What is drawn

  • The track as a line in three speed bands: slow (below 30 km/h) and normal. Then over speed (at or above Overspeed Above, 60 km/h to start with)
  • Halts: standing for 2 minutes or more, with minutes and times
  • Alerts of the vehicle in the period, at their position
  • A moving marker with the time and speed at each point
  • A legend for the bands and halts

Summary of the period

  • Kilometres driven (jumps faster than 250 km/h are treated as GPS noise and not counted)
  • Top speed
  • Number of halts and of alerts

Limits of the track

  • A long period is thinned to 5,000 points to keep the map fast; a shorter period shows every point
  • Positions come from the tracking server, which keeps 90 days; older tracks cannot be played back
  • Trips, kilometres and alerts worked out from a track stay after the track is gone

Who uses it

Transport officeChecks a complaint, a late run or an alert by replaying the run.
Transport in-charge or principalReviews speeding on a route and talks to the driver with the track on screen.
Fleet managerOpens a trip from the Trips list to see where the kilometres were driven.

Where you use it

  • Web: Transport > Operations > Live Map, Playback
  • Web: Transport > Operations > Trips, Play Back on a trip
  • Not in the phone apps
  • Not exportable as a file: the track is viewed on the map

What you control

Settings

  • Overspeed Above (km/h): 60 to start with; sets where the line turns red
  • The slow band below 30 km/h is fixed

Questions

Can we prove the bus was speeding?

The red parts of the line show where the GPS speed was at or above your limit, with the time and speed at each point. It is the speed the unit reported, not a certified measurement.

Can we play back one run instead of the whole day?

Yes. Choose the run in the list next to the day. The track covers the run from five minutes before it started to five minutes after it ended.

How far back can we go?

As far as your plan keeps the history: 30 days on Growth and 90 days on Scale. The tracking server never keeps more than 90 days.

Why do short halts sometimes not show?

A long period is thinned to 5,000 points. Choose a single day or a single run to see every halt.

Can we download the track?

Not yet. The track is shown on the map; the trips list with kilometres and times can be exported to a spreadsheet.

LIVE MAP AND PLAYBACKLive map of all vehiclesThe transport office sees every tracked vehicle on one map: moving, idle, stopped or offline, and its speed. It also sees the run it is on with its driver and how late it is. The stops of the running runs show their expected time and turn green once reached.TRIPS, KILOMETRES, ALERTSTrips and kilometres per vehicleEvery night each tracked vehicle's trips of the day before are worked out from its GPS positions. Each has start and end, kilometres, duration, top speed, idle time and who drove. The day's kilometres are added to the vehicle's odometer, marked From GPS.TRIPS, KILOMETRES, ALERTSAlerts: SOS, overspeed, tamper, idle and fuel dropThe transport office is alerted to SOS, overspeed, a tracker's power cut or tampering, and a device offline. Also to long idling, use outside your hours and sudden fuel drops. Each alert is acknowledged with a note of what was done.TRIPS, KILOMETRES, ALERTSDriving score per tripEach GPS trip gets a driving score out of 100, linked to the driver of the run or booking. It is lowered for harsh acceleration and braking, minutes over your speed limit and idling. The formula is still being tuned on real vehicles, so treat the score as a pointer to trips worth a look.TRACKING SET-UPGPS tracking devices on your vehiclesEach vehicle reports its position through a GPS unit or the driver's phone to our own Traccar tracking server. SmartMy Transit reads the positions from there for the live map, arrival times, trips and alerts. Your Entity's speed limit goes to every device.
