Driving score per trip
Each GPS trip gets a driving score out of 100, linked to the driver of the run or booking. It is lowered for harsh acceleration and braking, minutes over your speed limit and idling. The formula is still being tuned on real vehicles, so treat the score as a pointer to trips worth a look.
PLANSFrom Growth
Built and tested in code. The formula has not been tuned on real vehicles; harsh events need a unit that reports every 1 to 2 seconds.
The problem it solves
- You hear that a driver brakes hard or speeds only when a parent complains.
- Talking to a driver about driving has nothing to point to beyond what someone said.
- Engines run at the school gate for long stretches and nobody adds it up.
How it works
- Each night, when the trips of the day before are worked out, every trip gets a score.
- It starts at 100. Each harsh acceleration or harsh braking takes 5 points, each minute over your Entity's speed limit 2 points, each idle minute 0.2 points. It never goes below 0.
- Harsh means a speed change of 3 m/s² or more between two positions (about 11 km/h gained or lost in one second). It is counted only between positions up to 60 seconds apart.
- The trip's driver is the driver of the route run or vehicle booking the vehicle was on at that time.
- In Transport > Operations > Trips, group by Driver to compare. Switch on the Harsh Acceleration, Harsh Braking and Overspeed (min) columns, or press Play Back on a low-scoring trip.
Everything it does
On each trip
- Driving Score (0 to 100)
- Harsh Acceleration and Harsh Braking: counts
- Overspeed (min): minutes above Overspeed Above (60 km/h to start with)
- Idle (min): engine on, standing
- Driver: from the run or booking at that time
Reading it
- The Trips list shows the score; group by driver, vehicle or day
- The pivot shows the score by vehicle and month
- Play Back shows the trip on the map with its red over-speed parts
- Export the list to a spreadsheet
What it needs and what it is not
- Harsh events are found only when the unit reports every 1 to 2 seconds. At the usual 10 seconds most will not show, and the score then reflects speeding and idling
- The weights (5, 2 and 0.2) are fixed in this version and not settings
- No league table, driver coaching or messages to drivers
- Not a certified measure of driving; the formula is still being tuned on real vehicles
Who uses it
Fleet managerLooks for low scores and repeated over-speed minutes by driver, and plays back those trips.
Transport in-chargeUses the trip's track and numbers when talking to a driver.
Where you use it
- Web: Transport > Operations > Trips (Driving Score column, group by Driver, pivot)
- Not in the Crew app: drivers do not see their score
- Not on a dashboard or in a scheduled report
What you control
Settings
- Overspeed Above (km/h): 60 to start with
- The unit's reporting interval, set on the GPS unit: every 1 to 2 seconds to count harsh events
Questions
Can we rank drivers by score?
You can group the Trips list or the pivot by driver and compare. There is no ready-made league table, and with an untuned formula we advise against using it to judge drivers on its own.Why are harsh braking counts always zero?
Your units probably report every 10 seconds or so. Harsh events need a position every 1 to 2 seconds. Ask your dealer to change the interval, which uses more data. Can we change the weights?
Not today. The weights are fixed while the formula is tuned on real vehicles.Does the driver's phone give a score?
A trip tracked by the phone gets a score from speed and idling. The phone sends every 10 seconds while moving, so harsh events are rarely counted.Related features
TRIPS, KILOMETRES, ALERTSTrips and kilometres per vehicleEvery night each tracked vehicle's trips of the day before are worked out from its GPS positions. Each has start and end, kilometres, duration, top speed, idle time and who drove. The day's kilometres are added to the vehicle's odometer, marked From GPS.LIVE MAP AND PLAYBACKRoute playback with a speed-coloured lineReplay where a vehicle went on any day, or on one of its runs, as a line coloured by speed. It is red where it was over your speed limit. Halts of two minutes or more and the alerts on the way are marked, with the time and speed at every point.TRIPS, KILOMETRES, ALERTSAlerts: SOS, overspeed, tamper, idle and fuel dropThe transport office is alerted to SOS, overspeed, a tracker's power cut or tampering, and a device offline. Also to long idling, use outside your hours and sudden fuel drops. Each alert is acknowledged with a note of what was done.TRACKING SET-UPGPS tracking devices on your vehiclesEach vehicle reports its position through a GPS unit or the driver's phone to our own Traccar tracking server. SmartMy Transit reads the positions from there for the live map, arrival times, trips and alerts. Your Entity's speed limit goes to every device.WITH SMARTMY HRMSDrivers from SmartMy HRMS, trips as attendanceWith SmartMy HRMS, employees become riders in one pick. A run whose driver or helper is on approved leave is flagged, with a to-do for the transport office. Starting and ending a run or a booking trip counts as the crew's attendance.
