Live map of all vehicles

The transport office sees every tracked vehicle on one map: moving, idle, stopped or offline, and its speed. It also sees the run it is on with its driver and how late it is. The stops of the running runs show their expected time and turn green once reached.
PLANSFrom Growth
Built and tested in code with a stand-in tracking server. Not yet run with real GPS units; tested with your first unit before go-live.

The problem it solves

  • Parents call the school because the bus is late, and the office has to phone the driver to find out where it is.
  • A bus stands with the engine running for twenty minutes and nobody knows.
  • A tracker stops sending and nobody notices until the bus needs to be found.
  • The tracker vendor's map shows dots, but not which route the bus is on or who is driving it.

How it works

  1. Open Transport > Operations > Live Map. Every vehicle with a tracking device appears at its latest position.
  2. The list on the left shows each vehicle with its plate, its status, its run, its speed and the time of the last position. The map and the list refresh every 15 seconds.
  3. Colours show the status: green moving, amber idle (engine on, standing), grey stopped, red offline, pale grey no position yet.
  4. Type in Search vehicle / route to shorten the list. Click a vehicle to move the map to it.
  5. Click a marker to see the run, the driver and how many minutes late it is.
  6. The stops of the running runs are on the map with their expected arrival time; a stop turns green once the vehicle reaches it.
  7. Press Playback on the same screen to replay a vehicle's day or one run.

Everything it does

Status of a vehicle

  • Moving: 3 km/h or faster
  • Idle: standing with the engine on (from the unit's ignition wire)
  • Stopped: standing with the engine off
  • Offline: nothing received for longer than Device Offline After (10 minutes to start with)
  • No position: the device has never sent one

On the map and in the list

  • Plate or name, status, speed in km/h, the time of the last position
  • The running run of the vehicle, its driver and its delay in minutes
  • Stops of every running run, with the ETA, green once reached
  • Search by vehicle, plate or route; click to zoom to a vehicle
  • Refreshed every 15 seconds; the line under the list says when it was last updated
  • On a phone browser the list sits under the map

The map itself

  • Google Maps, shared by every SmartMy map screen in the browser tab
  • Without your own Google Maps key, map openings count against a daily limit (200 to start with); with your own key there is no limit
  • After a browser reload, or when another tab holds the map, the screen shows an Open map button instead of loading a new map
  • With no key set up, the screen says maps are not set up yet and the list still works

Who sees what

  • The transport office (Fleet: Officer) and administrators only; drivers and helpers do not see the map
  • Vehicles of the Entities the user works in
  • Riders and parents see their own bus, not the fleet: in the SmartMy Transit Rider app

Who uses it

Transport officeWatches the buses during the morning and evening runs, answers parents' calls and follows up late runs.
Transport in-charge or principalChecks where the fleet is at any time and which runs are late.
Transport administratorSets the offline minutes and the tracking server so vehicles appear.

Where you use it

  • Web: Transport > Operations > Live Map
  • The SmartMy Transit Rider app: a rider's or parent's own bus on a small map, refreshed every 20 seconds. It is built and in testing, not in the app stores yet
  • Not on the My transport web page: it shows the expected time, and the map is in the Rider app
  • Not for drivers and helpers

What you control

Settings

  • Device Offline After (minutes): 10 to start with
  • Overspeed Above (km/h): 60 to start with
  • Google Maps key: SmartMy's own to start with, or yours under Settings > Maps

Questions

How fresh is the position?

The screen asks for the latest positions every 15 seconds. How often a unit sends depends on its settings; we suggest about every 10 seconds when moving. A phone running the Crew app sends every 10 seconds when moving.

Does it show traffic or the road the bus will take?

No. The map shows where each vehicle is and the stops of its running run with their expected times. Traffic is not shown or used.

Can parents see all the buses?

No. A parent sees only their child's bus in the SmartMy Transit Rider app, and only while the run is on.

What happens if the tracking server is down?

The map opens and lists the vehicles without a position, and fills in again when the server answers.

Can we watch the map on a wall screen?

Yes, in any browser signed in as a transport office user. It refreshes by itself every 15 seconds.

TRACKING SET-UPGPS tracking devices on your vehiclesEach vehicle reports its position through a GPS unit or the driver's phone to our own Traccar tracking server. SmartMy Transit reads the positions from there for the live map, arrival times, trips and alerts. Your Entity's speed limit goes to every device.LIVE MAP AND PLAYBACKRoute playback with a speed-coloured lineReplay where a vehicle went on any day, or on one of its runs, as a line coloured by speed. It is red where it was over your speed limit. Halts of two minutes or more and the alerts on the way are marked, with the time and speed at every point.ARRIVAL TIMESExpected arrival times that learn from real runsEvery stop of a running run gets an expected arrival time, worked out again every minute from where the vehicle is. Arrival and departure are recorded by themselves when the vehicle enters and leaves the stop's circle. The times between stops learn from the route's recent runs on the same weekday.TRIPS, KILOMETRES, ALERTSAlerts: SOS, overspeed, tamper, idle and fuel dropThe transport office is alerted to SOS, overspeed, a tracker's power cut or tampering, and a device offline. Also to long idling, use outside your hours and sudden fuel drops. Each alert is acknowledged with a note of what was done.DAILY RUNSDaily runs planned by themselvesEvery route gets its run for today and the coming days by itself: vehicle, crew, stops, times and that day's riders. The driver starts it, each stop records the delay, and the run ends or is cancelled.PHONE APPSThe Rider app for riders and parentsSmartMy Transit Rider shows riders and parents today's rides, the stop time, the rider's state and past rides. They can also say "not riding". From Growth the bus moves on a map with the expected time at your stop.
