Campus app for parents and students

One app on Android and iPhone for parents and students: attendance, timetable, homework, results, notices, leave, meetings, fees and chat with teachers. A parent signs in once and switches between all their children, even in different schools of your group.
PLANSEvery plan
Built and tested on our test systems with screen-by-screen checks. Not yet in the Play Store or the App Store, and not yet used by a school.

The problem it solves

  • Parents juggle a diary, three WhatsApp groups and calls to the office to know what happened at school today.
  • A parent with two children needs two logins, or the school makes one child's account do for both.
  • Homework handed in as a photo on WhatsApp gets lost in the teacher's phone.
  • The school's messages reach a parent only by SMS, which costs money every time.

How it works

  1. The school office links each parent to their children and gives the login. The parent installs the Campus app and signs in with their email or mobile number and password, or with your single sign-on.
  2. Home shows one child: what needs the parent's attention, such as overdue fees or homework returned. Below are today's periods, the latest notices and the attendance, homework and fees figures.
  3. With more than one child, the parent taps the class name at the top and picks another child. Every page then shows that child.
  4. The Menu holds the pages your school uses, under Learning, Examinations, School, Fees and services, and More. A page your school does not use is not shown.
  5. The parent acts from the app: hands in homework with photos, applies for leave, books a parent-teacher meeting, requests a certificate or pays fees online.
  6. Alerts from the school show in the app's Alerts. Phone push is built in and not switched on yet; a tap will open the right child and page.

Everything it does

Sign-in and children

  • Email or phone and password, the same login as the parent portal; Keep me signed in; Forgot password opens your school's reset page
  • Sign in with your school's single sign-on, where you have it
  • One login for all of a parent's children, also in different schools of the same account
  • A student can have their own login and sees only their own pages
  • A teacher who is also a parent switches between the staff view and their children

Learning

  • Attendance: percentage present, periods attended, absent and late; by subject; each absence with the teacher's remark; special days; a red line below the school's minimum
  • Timetable: one card per day, the coming holidays, and periods replaced by an exam in the next two weeks
  • Homework: due, submitted, evaluated, not handed in and study material. Hand in with an answer, Take photo, Choose photos or Add a file, up to 20 MB a file
  • Results: published results and report cards
  • Activities: join, follow or leave activities, where your school runs them

School

  • Notices: circulars and notices with their files
  • Leave: apply (full or half day, morning or afternoon) and follow the answer
  • Teacher meetings: book a slot, cancel, join an online meeting, read what was shared after it
  • Meet the school: ask to meet the principal or a teacher
  • Certificates: request one and download the PDF
  • Conduct, Library, Pickup, Visitors and Transport, where your school uses them

Fees and messages

  • Fees: dues with Pay online, receipts, and the plan and trips, where your school collects fees in SmartMy School
  • Chat: message the teachers your school allows for this child, with photos; Seen marks a read message
  • Alerts: the school's messages about the child; a red number counts unread chats and alerts

What the school decides

  • Parent access per school: View and act (to start with for schools), View only, or No access
  • Students Use the Portal: on to start with
  • Which pages show: only what your school has switched on
  • Phone notifications work once your app's push set-up is in place; without it, alerts are still in the app

The app

  • Android and iPhone, phone and tablet; every page is in the Menu, and a tablet shows a second column beside the first
  • Theme: like the phone, light or dark, and a colour
  • PDFs (receipts, report cards, certificates) open inside the app

Where you use it

  • The same pages on the web: the parent and student portal
  • Not built today: an app with your school's own name and icon
  • Not in this app: the hostel and the mess, which have their own SmartMy apps

What you control

Settings

  • Parent Access: View and act for schools to start with; View only or No access
  • Students Use the Portal: on to start with
  • Parent & Student Logins: Portal / app only (recommended, to start with) or Back office
  • Each family chooses its own channels and which informational messages it gets, on the portal's Notifications page

Approvals

  • What parents send from the app (leave, certificates, activity requests) follows the same approval chains as on the web

Notifications

  • Every school notification for a family also lands in Alerts in the app, and as a phone notification where push is set up
  • A tap on a phone notification opens the app on the right child and the page it is about

Questions

Is the app in the Play Store?

Not yet. The Campus app is built and in testing. Until it is published, families use the same pages on the parent portal in any phone browser.

I have two children in different schools of the same trust. Do I need two logins?

No. One login shows every child linked to you, also across the schools in your trust's account. Tap the class name at the top to switch child.

Can the school stop parents from applying for leave?

Yes. Set Parent Access to View only. Parents then see everything but the forms are hidden, and the page says so.

Do parents need SMS to be told about homework?

No. The in-app Alerts and phone notifications are free. Phone push is built in and not switched on yet. SMS and WhatsApp use paid credits and are set up and tested with you before go-live.

Can the app carry our school's name?

Not today. An app under your school's name and icon has not been made yet. The Campus app carries the SmartMy Campus name.
