Piece work and labour contractor checks
Pay a worker or a gang for the work they did, not the days. Measure it against your piece rates, approve it, and the wage run pays each one's share. Check a labour contractor's bill against the man-days your own muster rolls recorded.
PLANSFrom Growth
The problem it solves
- A gang is paid per square metre of brickwork, and the split between them is argued every week.
- Measurements for piece work are written on paper and paid before anyone checks them.
- The labour contractor bills 400 man-days and nobody can say how many were on site.
- Piece workers with no attendance are left out of the wage sheet.
How it works
- Set your Piece Rates: the work (for example Brickwork 230 mm), the trade, the unit, the rate per unit, for one project or all.
- Measure the work in Construction Site > Labour > Workers > Piece Work > New. Give the project and place, the piece rate, the quantity, the dates, and the worker or gang.
- Choose how to split the amount: Equally, or By Days Worked on the project in that period.
- Send for Approval. A Construction Manager, or your Piece Work Measurement chain, approves or sends it back with a reason.
- On approval each worker's share is shown. The next wage run of the period pays the shares and marks the measurement Paid.
- For a contractor's bill: open Check a Contractor's Bill, choose the contractor and period, type the man-days billed by trade and press Compare.
Everything it does
Piece rates and measurements
- Piece rate: work, trade (empty: any), unit, rate per unit, project (empty: every project), active
- Measurement: number, project, place, piece rate (fills work, unit and rate), quantity measured, rate, amount, work from, measured on, measured by, notes
- Only workers paid Per Piece of Work can be on a measurement
- States: Draft, Waiting for Approval, Approved, Rejected, Paid; only a draft changes
- Draft and rejected measurements can be deleted; a rejected one goes back to draft
Shares
- Equally among the gang, or By Days Worked: present 1, half day 0.5 on the project in the period
- No attendance in the period: split equally, with a note
- Each share: worker, days, quantity, amount; rounding goes to the last share
Paid in the wage run
- Fill from Attendance adds approved, unpaid shares measured in the run's period, also for workers with no attendance
- The line's Piece Work section lists the shares and their total is the basic pay
- Approving the run marks the shares paid; refused if some were paid in another run meanwhile
- Pieces Done typed on a line still works where there is no measurement
Check a contractor's bill
- Labour contractor, project (empty: all), from and to
- Man-Days Billed typed by trade; Man-Days Recorded from muster rolls and check-ins (present 1, half day 0.5)
- Billed Beyond Our Records per trade and in total, and the overtime hours recorded
- A check on screen: it does not hold or change the contractor's bill

Questions
Can a gang share one measurement?
Yes. Put every worker of the gang on it and split equally, or by the days each was present on the project in that period. Can a worker be paid both by the day and by the piece?
No. A worker has one way of being paid. Only workers paid Per Piece of Work can be on a measurement.Does the contractor check stop the bill?
No. It shows the man-days billed against those you recorded, trade by trade. You decide what to pay on the bill. What if a measurement is wrong?
Send it back with the reason. It becomes Rejected, goes back to draft, is corrected and sent again.Related features
SITEWage runs, advances, bank file and slipsPay site workers from their attendance. A wage run fills itself and works out basic, overtime, deductions and advance recovery. It goes for approval, then is paid by a bank file or in cash against the worker's signature. Wage slips print in each worker's language.SITEWorkers, attendance and the muster rollKeep every site worker, your own and each labour contractor's, with their trade, pay and ID. Mark the day on the muster roll, or check workers in and out on the foreman's phone with the site's location. Punches can also come from a fingerprint device or the face kiosk. One attendance line a day per worker feeds the wages and the site report.MONEYMeasurement book, retention and advancesSite staff measure each item's work by place, as Nos. x length x breadth x depth with photos; a manager certifies it, and only certified quantities reach the running bill. Retention is kept from every bill and released in one step, and the mobilisation advance is recovered bill by bill.MONEYWork orders and subcontractor billsA work order to each subcontractor with items, rates and terms, approved before work starts.
