The course player with a moving watermark, no downloads, progress and resume
One player for staff, students and outside learners. Videos resume where they stopped and documents show without a download button. A watermark with the learner's name moves over the lesson, so a recording shows who made it.
PLANSEvery plan
Built and checked in code; not yet installed on a test system or used by a customer.
The problem it solves
- Paid or confidential course material gets downloaded and passed around in groups.
- Learners lose their place in a long video and give up.
- You cannot tell who actually watched the lesson and who only opened it.
How it works
- Staff open My Learning > My Courses. Students and outside learners open the Learn card on their portal, or the SmartMy Learn app.
- A course shows its lessons by section: a tick when done, a lock with the reason when not open yet, and Start or Continue.
- A video starts where the learner stopped. While it plays, the player saves the place every 15 seconds.
- The learner's name, login and today's date sit over videos and documents and jump to a new place every 20 seconds.
- Each lesson counts as done by its own rule, such as 90 % of a video watched. The progress bar moves with it.
Everything it does
When a lesson counts as done
- Video: when the furthest point played reaches 90 % (a setting per course)
- PDF and slides: when the learner presses Mark as Done
- Article: after a short read on the page; Link: when opened; File to Download: when downloaded
- Quiz, assignment, live class and packages: by their own results
Protection
- Moving watermark: name, login and date, over videos and documents, moving every 20 seconds
- PDFs and slides show inside the player with the toolbar hidden and right-click off
- A Download button only where the lesson allows it (off to start with); File to Download lessons are meant to be downloaded
- File links are signed and last one hour
- In the app: Android blocks screenshots and recording during a lesson; iPhone covers the lesson while the screen is recorded
Progress and time
- Per lesson: share watched or read, where the video stopped, the furthest point, time spent
- Time counts only while the page is on screen; one save never adds more than 10 minutes
- Per course: progress %, lessons done of lessons needed, last lesson, last seen
- Previous and Next on each lesson; Continue opens the next open lesson
Who sees the lesson
- Enrolled learners see lessons open to them; anyone who can see the course sees Free Preview lessons
- Pages of lessons that are locked or not theirs are refused
Who uses it
LearnerFollows lessons on the web, the portal or the app, and picks up where they stopped.
Learn AuthorChooses the share of a video that counts and which files may be downloaded, and follows progress per lesson.
Where you use it
- Web: /learn for staff (My Learning > My Courses); the Learn card on the portal for students and outside learners
- The SmartMy Learn app: videos, PDFs and slides on its own screens (built and in testing, not in the app stores yet)
- Web: each enrolment's Lessons Followed tab for authors
What you control
Settings
- Video Watched to Count: 90 % per course
- Learners May Download: off per lesson
- Block Screenshots in the App: on, in Learn settings
Notifications
- Course Finished: to the learner when every needed lesson is done, by email and in the app
- Every Learn event is a work message, so nobody can switch it off for themselves
Questions
Can learners download our videos?
Videos play from YouTube or Vimeo, not from our servers, with the learner's name moving over them. Use unlisted YouTube or Vimeo privacy settings as well. Can a learner skip to the end of a video?
They can move forward. The lesson counts when the furthest point played reaches 90 %, so jumping ahead and playing the last part counts too.Does progress follow the learner from the web to the app?
Yes. Progress, the place in a video and the last lesson are kept on the server, so the app and the web show the same. Can we stop screen recording?
In the app on Android, screenshots and recording are blocked during a lesson. On iPhone a screenshot cannot be blocked, so the lesson is covered while the screen is recorded or shared.Related features
