The SmartMy Learn app, with lessons saved for offline and screenshots blocked

Learners take their courses, lessons and live classes and keep their certificates on the phone; teachers see their learners and mark from it. PDFs and slides can be saved for offline, and screenshots are blocked during a lesson.

Built and passed static checks; not yet run on a phone, not in the app stores yet, and not yet used by a customer.

The problem it solves

  • Staff in the field and students without a laptop cannot learn when the course lives on a desktop website.
  • Learners on a train or in a village lose the signal half-way through a lesson.
  • Lesson screens are captured and shared in groups minutes after they go up.

How it works

  1. Learners sign in with the same login as the web. The Campus app's Online courses and the HRMS app's Learning open it too.
  2. Everyone opens on My Learning: courses with progress and due dates, live classes coming up, learning paths and the overdue count.
  3. Join with a code on My Learning joins a course at once; Explore lists courses and paths open to join or ask.
  4. Lessons open in the app: YouTube, Vimeo, PDFs and slides on their own screens, other lessons in the lesson page inside the app.
  5. In courses that allow it, PDFs and slides have a save button. Saved lessons are kept inside the app for 30 days, and offline progress is sent when the phone is back online.
  6. Teachers open Teaching for their courses, learners and join requests, and To Mark for quizzes and assignments.

Everything it does

The Menu

  • My Learning area: My Courses (with the overdue count and Join with a code), Explore, Community (with community spaces), My Certificates (with certificates)
  • Manage Courses area, for authors: Courses (Teaching) and Learning > Marking > Quizzes to Mark or Assignments to Mark (To Mark)
  • No bottom tabs; everyone opens on My Learning
  • A notice opens the right screen: To Mark, My Learning for a live class, My Certificates for a certificate

For learners

  • Courses: Learning, Finished and Saved; progress, due date, overdue
  • Each course: lessons open, done or locked with the reason
  • Videos resume where they stopped; progress follows between the app and the web
  • Live classes on now and in the next 14 days, Join, and last week's recordings
  • Learning paths, points and badges (where installed), course feedback after finishing
  • Quizzes and assignment hand-ins in the lesson page inside the app

For teachers and trainers

  • Teaching: your courses with learners, finished count and join requests; Accept or Refuse with a reason
  • Each course's learners with progress and status
  • To Mark: quiz answers to mark, and assignments with marks, rubric points, feedback or Return for Changes

Saved for offline

  • Course option Save for Offline in the App: off to start with
  • PDFs and slides only; videos are YouTube or Vimeo links and cannot be saved
  • Kept in the app's own folder, not in the phone's files, with the learner's name over them
  • Kept for the days set in Learn settings (30), then deleted
  • Fetched over a signed link only while the lesson is open to the learner

Screenshots

  • Block Screenshots in the App: on to start with, in Learn settings
  • Android: screenshots and screen recording are blocked while a lesson is open
  • iPhone: a screenshot cannot be blocked; the lesson is covered while the screen is recorded or shared

Questions

Is the app in the Play Store or App Store?

Not yet. It is built and in testing. Until it is published, learners use the player on the web or the portal, which works on a phone browser.

Can learners save videos for offline?

No. Videos are YouTube or Vimeo links, which need the internet. PDFs and slides can be saved in courses where you allow it.

Can learners copy saved files out of the app?

Saved lessons stay in the app's own folder, not in the phone's files, and are deleted after the days you set. The learner's name shows over them.

Do teachers need a separate app?

No. The same app shows Teaching and To Mark to people with the Learn Author role.
