Question bank and quizzes with a timer, attempts and negative marks
Keep your questions in one bank, in ten kinds. Build quizzes from chosen or random questions with a timer, attempts, negative marks and a pass mark. Seven kinds are marked at once; written and file answers wait for a teacher.

The problem it solves
- Teachers retype the same questions for every test and keep them in personal files.
- Everyone gets the same paper in the same order, so answers travel round the class.
- Marking objective questions by hand takes evenings, and the totals still have mistakes.
- Nobody knows which questions most learners get wrong.
How it works
- Authors add questions in Learn > Manage Courses > Courses > Question Bank. Each has a kind, marks, marks lost if wrong, difficulty, tags and the right answer.
- Add a lesson of kind Quiz. Choose These Questions, or Random from the Bank with how many, which tags and which difficulty.
- Set the time limit, attempts allowed, pass mark, whether the best or last attempt counts, and when right answers show.
- Learners press Start the Quiz. The time counts down, answers are saved every 30 seconds, and the quiz is submitted when time runs out.
- Choice, true or false, fill the blank, number, match and order questions are marked at once. Short, long and file answers go to Quizzes to Mark.
- The teacher gives marks and a comment per answer and presses Finish Marking. The quiz lesson is done when the counting attempt passes.
Everything it does
Question kinds
- Single Choice, Multiple Choice, True or False, Fill the Blank, Number, Match the Pairs, Put in Order: marked at once
- Short Answer, Long Answer, File Answer: marked by a teacher
- Fill the Blank: accepted answers separated by | (USA|United States); Case Matters off to start with
- Number: the right number and an allowed difference
- Each question: Marks (1), Marks Lost if Wrong (0), Difficulty (Medium), Tags, Explanation, pictures and formulas
- Only for Course: empty means any course of the entity may use it
Marking rules
- Multiple Choice: right only when exactly the right options are chosen
- Match the Pairs and Put in Order: a share of the marks for each pair or place that is right
- Marks Lost if Wrong apply to an answered question that is wholly wrong; a blank answer loses nothing
- An attempt's score never shows below 0 %
- A teacher cannot give more than the question's marks
Quiz options
- These Questions (with marks per question) or Random from the Bank: How Many (10), From Tags, Only Difficulty
- Shuffle Questions and Options: on to start with
- Time Limit in minutes: 0 means none; 60 seconds of grace, later answers are marked late
- Attempts Allowed: 0 means as many as the learner wants
- Pass Mark (%): 0 means done once submitted and marked
- Counts: Best Attempt (default) or Last Attempt
- Show Right Answers: Never, After Submitting (default) or After the Due Date
Fair play
- Learners cannot read the question bank or the right options; they see only their own attempts
- Each attempt keeps the order its questions and options were shown in
- An attempt left open past its time is submitted with what was saved when the learner next opens the quiz
- File answers up to 20 MB, seen only by the learner, the course's authors and Learn Managers
Reports
- Quiz Results: every attempt with score, percent, passed and who marked it
- Hardest Questions: the share of right answers per question, lowest first
- With the gradebook, the counting attempt goes into the course grade

Questions
Can each student get a different paper?
Yes. Use Random from the Bank with a number of questions, tags and a difficulty, and keep Shuffle on. Each attempt draws and orders its own questions.Do you support negative marking?
Yes. Set Marks Lost if Wrong on each question. They are taken only when a question is answered and wholly wrong. What if the learner closes the page during a timed quiz?
The time keeps running on the server. If they come back after the time and 60 seconds, the attempt is submitted with the answers saved so far.Can AI write the questions?
The quiz has a Make Questions with AI button that drafts questions from the lessons for you to check. It works only for people an administrator has given AI and while the plan's AI allowance has credit.Related features
