Originality check of hand-ins

Written answers to an assignment are compared with earlier answers in your Entity and read for signs of AI writing. The marker sees the similarity, the closest answers and an AI-written likelihood, and decides.
PLANSScale only

The problem it solves

  • Two learners hand in the same essay with a few words changed, and the marker reads them a week apart.
  • Answers copied from an AI tool look polished and are hard to spot.
  • A check that blocks hand-in when it fails leaves learners stuck at the deadline.

How it works

  1. On an assignment lesson, tab Assignment, switch on Check Originality (off to start with).
  2. A written answer of at least 200 characters is compared, at hand-in, with the earlier checked answers of your Entity.
  3. The submission gets the Similarity (%) and the closest answers (learner, assignment, %). It also gets the AI-Written Likelihood (%) and one line of why.
  4. The marker reads them on the Originality tab of the submission. The list of submissions shows Similarity in red at 80 % or more.
  5. If the check cannot run, the submission says Could Not Check with the reason; handing in is never blocked. Check Originality on the submission runs it again.

Everything it does

The check

  • Written answers of 200 characters or more; files are not read
  • Compared with earlier answers that were checked in the same Entity, across all its courses
  • Each checked answer is kept for later comparisons
  • The AI says how likely the answer is AI-written (0 to 100) and why; plain correct writing is not counted as a sign

On the submission

  • Originality: Not Checked, Checked or Could Not Check, with a note
  • Similarity (%), Closest Answers, AI-Written Likelihood (%), Why
  • In the list: Similarity shown, AI-Written Likelihood optional; red at 80 % or more

When it runs

  • Only on assignments with Check Originality on
  • Your plan must include AI with credits left; each check uses credits
  • It does not need AI switched on for the learner or the marker

Who uses it

Learn AuthorSwitches the check on per assignment and reads the result while marking.
LearnerHands in as usual; the check never stops them.

Where you use it

  • Web: Learn > Manage Courses > Learning > Marking > Assignments to Mark, the submission's Originality tab
  • Not in the app's To Mark list: the results are read in the web back office
  • Not built: checks against the internet or outside services, and checks of uploaded files

What you control

  • Check Originality: per assignment, off to start with

Questions

Does a high score mean the learner cheated?

No. It points the marker to answers worth a closer look. The AI likelihood is a guess, and the marker decides.

Does it compare with the internet?

No. It compares with answers handed in to your own Entity that were checked before. Outside services are not connected.

What if AI credits run out on the due date?

Learners still hand in. The submission shows Could Not Check with the reason, and the marker can run the check again later.

Are files checked?

No. Only the written answer typed into the hand-in is checked.
