The problem it solves

  • Marks live in each teacher's register or spreadsheet, and adding them up for the term takes days.
  • A quiz and a major project count the same in the total because nobody set weights.
  • When a parent or manager asks how someone is doing, nobody has the full picture.

How it works

  1. On each quiz or assignment lesson, set Weight in the Grade. Use 1 to start with, 0 to leave it out, 3 to count it three times.
  2. When a quiz attempt is marked, or an assignment is marked, the learner's score in percent is written to the gradebook.
  3. The course grade is worked out again each time: the average of the scores so far, weighted.
  4. Open Learn > Manage Courses > Reporting > Learners and Courses > Gradebook. Every score shows as a list or a pivot, by course, learner or lesson.
  5. Each enrolment also shows its Course Grade and its Grades tab, lesson by lesson.

Everything it does

What goes in

  • Quizzes: the counting attempt (best or last, as the quiz says), in percent
  • Assignments: the marked score, in percent
  • One line per learner and lesson, updated when a new result comes in
  • Each line shows the score, the weight, where it came from (Quiz or Assignment) and when it was updated

The course grade

  • Weighted average of the graded lessons with a result so far
  • Weight in the Grade per lesson: 1 to start with; 0 leaves the lesson out
  • Shown on the enrolment as Grade (%) and averaged per course in reports

The report

  • Learn > Manage Courses > Reporting > Learners and Courses > Gradebook, as a list or pivot
  • Filters: Quizzes, Assignments
  • Group by Course, Learner, Lesson or Entity
  • Read only: results change by marking, not by typing in the gradebook

Who sees what

  • Course authors and editors see the grades of their courses; Learn Managers see all of the entity
  • Learners see their own quiz and assignment results on the lessons

Who uses it

Learn AuthorSets the weights and follows the grades on their courses.
Learn ManagerFollows grades across every course of the entity.
LearnerSees their own results on each quiz and assignment.

Questions

Can the final project count more than weekly quizzes?

Yes. Give the project a higher Weight in the Grade, such as 3, and leave the quizzes at 1.

Does a learner who skipped a quiz get zero?

No. The course grade averages the results so far. Use Learner Progress to see who has not done a lesson yet.

Can a teacher change a grade in the gradebook?

No. The gradebook is read only. Change the marks on the quiz attempt or assignment, and the gradebook follows.

Which quiz attempt counts?

The one the quiz says: the best attempt to start with, or the last attempt if you choose so.
