Question bank and question papers

Faculty add questions by unit, level and course outcome, and a reviewer approves them into the bank. Several setters, who do not see each other's work, fill papers from the bank or type them to your pattern. The selected paper stays sealed until shortly before the exam.
PLANSFrom Growth

The problem it solves

  • Question papers move between setters by email, and nobody knows which one is final.
  • Papers do not cover every unit or course outcome, and the gap shows only at an NBA visit.
  • The same questions come back every year.
  • The selected paper is opened days before the exam by more people than needed.

How it works

  1. Set up each course's units and course outcomes once. The six levels K1 Remember to K6 Create come ready.
  2. Faculty add questions under Examination > Question Bank > Questions, with unit, type, marks, difficulty, level, outcome and answer key. Then they press Send for Review.
  3. A Question Reviewer, often the head of department, approves the question or sends it back with a note. Only approved questions are used.
  4. Make a pattern: sections, how many questions of how many marks, the choice, the time allowed and the shares by difficulty and level.
  5. Make a question paper per setter. Each fills it from the bank, types it, or uploads one, and presses Hand In. A reviewer who is not the setter passes it or sends it back.
  6. The controller of examinations selects one paper, or sets A and B, and puts the rest in reserve. The selected paper prints only from 60 minutes before the exam.

Everything it does

Questions

  • Types: objective with options, short answer, long answer, problem, case study
  • Marks (2 to start with), difficulty easy, medium (the default) or hard, cognitive level, course outcome, unit, topic, language, author
  • Answer key or scheme of valuation; sub-questions (a), (b), (c) with their own marks
  • Formulas typed in LaTeX and placed as a picture
  • An approved question cannot be changed; it goes back to its author first
  • Faculty see only their own questions; reviewers and the exam cell see the whole bank

Patterns

  • Sections with the number of questions (10 to start with) and marks each (2 to start with). The choice: answer all, either / or, or any N
  • Time allowed: 3 hours to start with; total marks; general instructions
  • Shares of marks by difficulty and by cognitive level, give or take 10 %
  • Every unit has a question; a unit carries at most a % of the marks; every course outcome covered
  • Leave out questions used in the last 12 months

Question papers

  • Fill from the Bank adds what the pattern still needs from approved questions, spread over the units. It leaves out recent ones and those on other papers of the same exam
  • Any question can be swapped or typed; Against the Pattern lists what does not fit
  • Prints: the question paper and the scheme of valuation with answer keys

Several setters and the seal

  • A question paper per setter; each sees only their own
  • Scrutiny by a reviewer who is not the setter, through the approval chain Question paper scrutiny
  • Select for the Exam, or sets A and B on the same pattern; the rest to reserve, closed to all but the exam cell
  • Question Paper Opens: 60 minutes before the exam to start with, 0 for any time
  • Every print is logged and the printer's name runs across the page
  • External Setter: a login that sees one paper, and no longer once it is selected or in reserve

After the exam

  • Used questions take the exam's date as last used
  • Where a paper is valued under a scheme, marks are entered per question and sub-question, the best N counted where any N are answered
  • Marks by Course Outcome: the average score of each course outcome's questions
  • Paper Setting Rates and Paper Setting by Setter: a report, nothing paid from here
  • Question Bank sheet of the import workbook brings questions in from Excel

Who uses it

FacultyAdd questions to the bank, set question papers and hand them in.
Head of department (Question Reviewer)Approves questions and passes or sends back question papers.
Controller of examinations (exam cell)Makes patterns, assigns setters, selects the paper and sets, and prints the sealed paper on the day.
External paper setterSets one paper from a login that sees nothing else.
PrincipalReads marks by course outcome and the print history of each paper.

Where you use it

  • Web: Examination > Question Bank (Questions, Question Papers, Patterns), Configuration > Cognitive Levels and Paper Setting Rates, Reporting > Marks by Course Outcome
  • Not in the Campus app: questions and papers are written on the web
  • Not an online test: the bank makes printed papers for written exams

What you control

Settings

  • Question Paper Opens: 60 minutes before the exam
  • Leave out questions used in the last 12 months
  • Give or take on the shares: 10 %
  • Time allowed on a pattern: 3 hours
  • Cognitive levels K1 to K6 ready, can be changed

Approvals

  • Question paper scrutiny: one level of Question Reviewers by default, more levels if you add them; the setter never decides on their own paper

Notifications

  • None: reviewers find questions and papers waiting in their lists and approval to-dos

Questions

Does it help with outcome-based education for NBA?

Each question carries a course outcome and a level, and a pattern can require every outcome. After valuation, Marks by Course Outcome shows the average score per outcome. CO-PO mapping and attainment reports are not built.

Who can open the final paper before the exam?

Only the exam cell, and it prints only from 60 minutes before the paper starts unless you change it. Every print is logged with the printer's name across the page.

Can we bring our questions in from Excel?

Yes. Fill the Question Bank sheet, one row per question. Rows can come in approved. Formulas and pictures are added afterwards.

Can students take the paper online?

No. The question bank makes printed papers for written exams. There is no online test.
