Fast pictures: WebP, sizes for each screen, focal point

Upload your photos as they come from the camera. Visitors get a WebP copy sized for their screen and cut around the point you choose, so pages load fast and do not jump.
PLANSEvery plan

The problem it solves

  • A 12 MB photo from the phone makes the home page take ages to open on mobile data.
  • Faces are cut off when the same photo is shown square on phones and wide on computers.
  • The page jumps while pictures load, and visitors tap the wrong button.
  • Nobody has time to resize and compress each picture before uploading.

How it works

  1. Click a picture on the page and upload from your device, or drop pictures on the box. Big photos are fine.
  2. Press Description, focal point, shape on a picture. Click on what matters most, such as a face, and pick a shape if you want one.
  3. Write the description, or press Describe it with AI. It is read to blind visitors and used by Google.
  4. Publish. Each visitor's browser gets a WebP copy in the width that fits its screen, made once and kept.
  5. Change the focal point or shape later and every page that uses the picture follows.

Everything it does

Upload

  • JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, SVG or AVIF, up to 20 MB each
  • The picture box keeps every picture of the site under Your pictures
  • Photos taken sideways are turned the right way up

Served fast

  • WebP copies 480, 960, 1,440 and 1,920 pixels wide (never wider than the original), at a good quality
  • The browser picks the copy that fits the screen; copies are made once and kept a year
  • Each picture says its width and height, so the page does not jump while loading
  • The first picture of a page loads first; the others load only when scrolled to
  • Background pictures get one large WebP copy
  • SVG and GIF pictures are sent as they are; browsers without WebP get the original

Focal point and shape

  • Click on the part that must stay in view; small and cut copies keep it
  • Cut to: whole picture, square, wide 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9, tall 3:4 or 4:5
  • Changes show on every page that uses the picture

Descriptions

  • A description per picture, used wherever it appears
  • Describe it with AI writes one plain sentence of at most 125 characters from the photo
  • The page check counts pictures without a description

Who uses it

Where you use it

  • Web: the editor, the Choose a picture box (Your pictures) and Edit picture
  • Web: Website > Websites > the site > Pictures tab lists the site's pictures
  • Not a photo editor: no filters, brightness or retouching; edit the photo before uploading

  • Cut to: Whole picture to start with
  • Description: empty until you write it or ask AI

Questions

Do I need to resize photos before uploading?

No. Upload them as they are, up to 20 MB. Visitors get a WebP copy sized for their screen.

What happens on old browsers that do not show WebP?

They get the original picture you uploaded.

Can I show a photo square on one page and wide on another?

The shape belongs to the picture, so it is the same everywhere. Upload a second copy if you want two shapes; sections also lay pictures out in their own frames around the focal point.

Does Describe it with AI cost anything?

It uses your plan's AI credits, like the other AI buttons. It works on photos, not drawings.
