Lead lists from Excel or CSV, every column a merge field

Import a lead list from Excel or CSV. Name, company, phone and city fill the contact. Every other column, such as industry or pain point, is kept per person to use in your emails and messages.
PLANSEvery plan

The problem it solves

  • Each list is a different spreadsheet, and the same person sits in five of them.
  • Columns like industry or a personal first line are lost when the list goes into the email tool.
  • Someone overwrites good contact details with an old bought list.

How it works

  1. Open Marketing > Audience > Contacts and Lists > Lead Lists and press New. Name the list (Local manufacturers, Oct), with Where From and the Owner.
  2. Press Import from Excel / CSV and choose the file. The first row names the columns, and one must be called Email.
  3. Leave Update People Already Here off to only add known people to the list, or turn it on to fill their details from the file.
  4. After the import, a message tells you how many people are new and how many are in the list. It also says how many rows had no good address.
  5. Press Add to a Sequence to start a sequence or journey for everyone in the list, or start one on People in a Lead List.

Everything it does

The import

  • Excel (.xlsx, .xlsm) or CSV; commas, semicolons or tabs are found by themselves
  • Known columns: Email, Name (or First Name and Last Name), Company, Job Title or Designation, Phone or Mobile, City, Website
  • Every other column is kept per person under its name, for {{column}} in texts
  • One person per email address: a person in the file twice is added once, and a person already in your contacts is reused
  • Rows without a good email are skipped and counted
  • At most 50,000 people a file
  • Update People Already Here: off by default

Merge fields

  • {{name}}, {{first_name}}, {{last_name}}, {{company}}, {{email}}, {{phone}}, {{city}}, {{job_title}}, {{website}}
  • Any lead-list column by its name, such as {{industry}} or {{first_line}}
  • A fallback after |, such as {{company|your team}}
  • Also {{ object.field }}, a plain field of the contact up to three deep, such as {{ object.parent_id.name }}
  • Anything else between double braces is dropped, so no text in a step or broadcast can run code
  • A person's data is put in as plain text and never becomes template code

Using a list

  • Add to a Sequence: everyone in the list into a running sequence or journey
  • A journey on People in a Lead List takes everyone in it, and people added later
  • Verify Emails on the list checks every address (Growth)
  • On a contact, the Lead Lists tab shows its lists and its columns

Separation

  • Lists and their columns belong to an Entity; columns are kept per Entity

Questions

Does importing a list give us consent to send WhatsApp messages?

No. An import records no consent. WhatsApp marketing needs an opt-in, so record it by hand with your proof, or ask people to opt in.

Can we email an imported list?

Yes. Email goes to people with an address who have not unsubscribed, skipping your Do Not Contact list. Check the law that applies to you.

What if a column name has spaces?

It is kept in small letters with underscores: Pain Point becomes {{pain_point}}.

Will the import overwrite good data?

Not unless you turn on Update People Already Here. Off, known people are only added to the list.

Can we import more than 50,000?

Split the file. Each import takes up to 50,000 people.
