Email addresses checked before sending

Before a sequence emails someone, their address is checked. It catches not an address, a domain that takes no mail, a throwaway domain or a role address like info@. Bad ones are skipped by default, so your mailboxes do not collect bounces.
PLANSFrom Growth

The problem it solves

  • A bought list bounces at 15 % and the mailbox lands in spam for months.
  • Mail to info@ and sales@ reaches a shared box nobody reads.
  • Throwaway addresses from a form fill up the list.

How it works

  1. On a sequence, set Before Emailing: Send to All, Skip Bad Addresses (the default) or Skip Bad and Risky Addresses.
  2. When people enter the sequence, their addresses are checked. Each email step checks again if the address has changed.
  3. A skipped person is logged with why, such as 'The domain takes no mail'.
  4. To check ahead, press Verify Emails on a lead list, or select contacts and choose Action > Verify Emails. A message shows how many are good, risky and bad.

Everything it does

The result

  • Bad: not an email address, or the domain takes no mail
  • Risky: a throwaway domain (20 known ones), a role address (info@, sales@, support@, hr@ and others), or a domain that did not answer
  • Good: the rest; common free mail domains are taken as good
  • On the contact: Email Check, Email Check Says, the address checked and when

When addresses are checked

  • When a person enters a sequence or journey that sends email, unless it is set to Send to All
  • At each email step, if the address changed since the last check
  • Verify Emails on a lead list, or on contacts selected in the list

How it checks

  • The address's form, then the domain's mail (MX) records, else its A records
  • Only the domain is looked up, through a public DNS service; the address itself is not sent anywhere
  • Filters Bad Email and Risky Email in the contacts list

Questions

Does it test whether the mailbox exists?

No. It checks the address's form and whether the domain takes mail. Probing a mailbox or catch-all domains needs a paid checking service, which is not built.

Do broadcasts use it?

The skip setting is on sequences and journeys. Run Verify Emails on contacts before a large email broadcast and use the Bad Email filter.

Is it in Starter?

No. Email checks start in Growth.

Are gmail.com addresses checked?

Their form is checked; common free mail domains are taken as able to receive mail.
