Plants on every bill, and the plant summary

Run two or more plants under one GST number and still read each plant's own figures. Every invoice, bill and entry names its plant, and the Plant Summary shows each plant's stock, purchases, sales, margin, expenses and net for a period.
PLANSEvery plan

The problem it solves

  • Two plants share one GSTIN, so the books show one profit and nobody knows which plant earns it.
  • Goods sent from one plant to the other vanish from one stock and appear in the other at no value.
  • Electricity and wages are booked to the company, not to the plant that spent them.
  • You need a separate set of books per plant only to see this.

How it works

  1. Each plant is a warehouse. Adding one gives it an analytic account in the Places of Business plan; renaming the plant renames it.
  2. Optionally give a plant its own sales and purchase journals, so its invoices and bills take their own number series.
  3. Invoices from sales orders name the plant the order delivers from. Supplier bills from purchase orders name the plant the goods are received at. Job workers' bills name the challan's plant. You can set the plant on any other invoice, bill or entry.
  4. Posting puts the plant's analytic account on the income and expense lines, so expenses booked anywhere can be read per plant.
  5. Open Manufacturing > Reporting > Plant Summary. It opens on this month; change From and To and press Show.

Everything it does

Places of business

  • A plant is a warehouse under the Entity's GST number; a branch is only for another GST number
  • Analytic account per plant, made by itself
  • Sales Journal and Purchase Journal per plant: empty means the Entity's journals
  • Place of Business on invoices, bills and journal entries and their lines
  • Sales analysis groups by place

Plant Summary, one line per plant

  • Stock at Start and Stock at End (from the stock ledger by location)
  • Goods Purchased; From Other Places and To Other Places
  • Sales, Cost of Sales, Margin and Margin %
  • Expenses (from the plant's analytic account, cost of goods left out) and Net
  • Lines for goods In Transit between plants and entries Without a Place

Moves between plants

  • Stock Cost by Location: one cost for the Entity (to start with) or each warehouse its own average
  • With each warehouse its own cost, a transfer moves value at the sender's average

Who uses it

OwnerReads each plant's margin and net side by side.
AccountsSets the plant on entries, gives plants their journals and runs the summary at month end.

Questions

Do we need separate books for each plant?

No. One Entity with one GST number can have several plants. Each invoice, bill and entry names its plant, and the Plant Summary reads them per plant.

When do we need another Entity instead?

When the plant is another company. A branch is for another GST number of the same company; a plant is a place of business under one.

Where do expenses like power come from?

From the plant's analytic account: any expense posted with the plant set, or with its analytic account on the line, counts for that plant.

How many plants can we have?

One on Starter, two on Growth and five on Scale. Adding one more is refused with a message naming your plan's limit.
