SCORM 1.2 and xAPI packages

Play SCORM 1.2 and xAPI (Tin Can) courses bought from content makers or exported from your authoring tool, as lessons in your own courses. Their progress, score and place are kept, and the lesson is done when the package says so.

Built and checked in code; not yet installed on a test system or used by a customer.

The problem it solves

  • You bought ready courses as SCORM packages and have nowhere to play them.
  • Content made in an authoring tool lives outside your LMS, so its scores never reach your records.
  • Learners have to start a long package again from the beginning each time.

How it works

  1. Add a lesson of kind Package (SCORM / xAPI) and, on its Package tab, upload the zip, up to 500 MB.
  2. SmartMy Learn reads the zip: SCORM 1.2 from imsmanifest.xml, or xAPI from tincan.xml, with its title and the page it starts at.
  3. Set Score to Pass if the package's score should decide; 0 leaves it to the package saying completed or passed.
  4. Learners open the lesson and the package plays in the player. Its place and saved data are kept, so it resumes next time.
  5. When the package reports completed or passed, and the score is high enough, the lesson is done. Results show in Reporting > Packages and Tools > Package Results.

Everything it does

Uploading

  • One zip per lesson, up to 500 MB
  • SCORM 1.2: imsmanifest.xml; the first SCO is the start page
  • xAPI (Tin Can): tincan.xml; the activity's launch page and id
  • Package Kind, Package Title, Starts At and xAPI Activity are filled in from the zip
  • A zip with neither file is refused with the reason

SCORM 1.2 while playing

  • Lesson status, location, suspend data, raw and maximum score, and time are kept per learner
  • The package gets the learner's id and name, and resumes where it stopped
  • Saved data up to 64 KB per learner and lesson

xAPI while playing

  • Each package lesson has its own small statement store, with the learner as the actor
  • Statements completed, passed and failed and their score are read; the package's state is kept
  • The count of statements and the last one are kept per learner

Done and results

  • Done when the status is completed or passed and the score reaches Score to Pass (0: any score)
  • Package Results: per learner, status, score %, time and statements
  • Course authors, editors and Learn Managers can open the package to check it
  • Packages travel with the course in a course package export

Who uses it

Learn AuthorUploads packages as lessons, sets the score to pass and follows results.
LearnerPlays the package in the player, picking up where they stopped.

Where you use it

  • Web: the lesson's Package tab; Learn > Manage Courses > Reporting > Packages and Tools > Package Results
  • Web: the player for learners
  • The SmartMy Learn app: in the lesson page inside the app (built and in testing, not in the app stores yet)

What you control

Settings

  • Score to Pass (%): 0 to start with, per lesson

Notifications

  • No messages of its own; finishing the course sends Course Finished as usual

Questions

Which package standards do you play?

SCORM 1.2 and xAPI (Tin Can). SCORM 2004 and AICC are not supported, so export from your authoring tool as SCORM 1.2 or xAPI.

Does the learner resume where they stopped?

Yes. The package's location and saved data are kept per learner, so it opens where they left off.

Can a package's score decide whether the lesson is done?

Yes. Set Score to Pass. The lesson is then done when the package says completed or passed and the score reaches it.

Can we send xAPI statements to our own record store?

Not today. SmartMy Learn keeps the statements the package sends for its own lesson and results.
