Points, badges and leaderboards

Learners earn points for lessons, courses, quizzes and helping others. They collect badges by rules you set and see where they stand on the leaderboard.
PLANSScale only

The problem it solves

  • Optional courses are opened once and never finished.
  • The people who answer everyone's questions get no credit for it.
  • You cannot tell who in the Entity is learning the most this month.

How it works

  1. Points are on for every Entity to start with. A Learn Manager checks the points per action under Learn > Manage Courses > Configuration > Points and Badges > Points per Action.
  2. Learners earn points once for each source. Sources are a lesson done, a quiz passed, a course finished, a question, an answer, a best answer and each like received.
  3. After each gain the badges are checked. Four come ready: First Course, Keen Learner (5 courses), Helper (5 best answers) and 500 Points.
  4. Learners see their points and badges on My Learning in the player and the app, with the Leaderboard: this month and all time, top 20.
  5. Managers read the points ledger as a pivot under Learn > Manage Courses > Reporting > Learners and Courses > Leaderboard.

Everything it does

Points per action (to start with)

  • Lesson Done 5, Course Finished 50, Quiz Passed 10
  • Question Asked 2, Answer Given 3, Best Answer 15, Like Received 1
  • Each value can be changed, switched off, or set for one Entity only
  • Points are given once per lesson, course, post or like

Badges

  • A name, a picture (up to 256 pixels), How to Earn It, and a rule
  • Rules: Points Reached, Courses Finished (how many), A Course Finished (which one), Best Answers (how many)
  • Awarded by themselves, once per person and Entity; the Awarded To tab lists who has it
  • A badge for every Entity, or for one

Leaderboard and ledger

  • The player's Leaderboard: this month and all time, top 20 of the Entity, your own total on top
  • The app: points, this month's points, badges with the date earned, the last 20 gains and both leaderboards
  • Back office: every gain with who, for what and when; pivot by learner, filter This Month

Questions

Can a learner get points twice for the same lesson?

No. Points are given once for each lesson, course, post or like, whatever happens later.

Who sees the leaderboard?

Everyone with a login in the Entity sees the top 20, with names, this month and all time. Switch points off for the Entity if names should not be shown.

Can we turn it off for one school of the group?

Yes. Points and Badges is a switch for each Entity in the Learn settings. Off, no points are given and rights need no points.

Can a teacher give points by hand for good work?

Not yet. The reason Given by Hand exists, but there is no screen to give points. Tell us if you need it.
