Your courses inside Moodle, Canvas or Blackboard by LTI 1.3

Add SmartMy Learn as an LTI 1.3 tool in a university's or client's LMS. Their learners open your course from there, are signed in and enrolled here, and their progress goes back to that LMS's gradebook.
PLANSScale only

The problem it solves

  • A university wants your course, but its students live in its own LMS.
  • Each outside learner needs an account made by hand.
  • Their teachers want the progress in their own gradebook, not in a report you email.

How it works

  1. A Learn Manager opens Learn > Manage Courses > Configuration > Outside Tools > Inside Another LMS and adds the LMS. The form shows what to enter there: tool URL, login URL, redirect URL, key set URL and content selection URL.
  2. Enter what the LMS gives back: its issuer, client ID, deployment IDs, authentication, token and key set URLs.
  3. In the LMS, set the activity to open in a new window.
  4. A learner who opens the activity gets an outside learner login here (no password: they always come through the LMS), is signed in and enrolled.
  5. Which course opens: the one set on the link, the custom parameter course=<code>, or the LMS's default course. Otherwise the teacher picks it on the first launch or through content selection.
  6. Progress goes back as a grade from 0 to 100, completed when the course is finished, every ten minutes when it changes. See Learn > Manage Courses > Reporting > Packages and Tools > Grades Sent to Other LMSs.

Everything it does

The LMS record

  • Platform ID (Issuer), Client ID, Deployment IDs (empty: any)
  • Authentication Request URL, Access Token URL, Public Keyset URL
  • Match Learners by Email: on to start with
  • Send Progress as a Grade: on to start with
  • Course When None Is Chosen; Links and Learners tabs

Logins

  • One outside learner login per person of that LMS, kept by their LMS ID
  • Never a staff login
  • Learners get logins in the Entity the LMS is registered for and see its courses

Grades

  • A gradebook column is made when the LMS gave none
  • Each link shows the grade sent, when, and the last problem

  • In the other LMS: an LTI 1.3 activity that opens in a new window

Questions

Do learners need a password for SmartMy Learn?

No. They always come through their LMS, which signs them in here.

Which LMSs?

Any LMS that adds LTI 1.3 tools, such as Moodle, Canvas, Blackboard and Brightspace. Each is set up and tested with you before go-live.

What grade goes back?

The learner's course progress from 0 to 100, marked complete when the course is finished.

Should Match Learners by Email stay on?

Keep it on only for an LMS where people cannot change their own email address. Otherwise switch it off, so each LMS person gets their own login here.
