BOM per unit of work and material requirement

Say once what one unit of work takes, such as 1 m³ of M20 concrete or 1 m² of 230 mm brick wall. Give a wastage % per material. Name the BOM on each BOQ item, and the project's material requirement follows: cement, sand, steel and bricks by place and month.
PLANSEvery plan

The problem it solves

  • The cement needed for a tower is worked out on paper once, and never again when the BOQ changes.
  • Site asks for material whenever it runs out, and nobody can check the request against what the work needs.
  • At the end of the job nobody can explain why 15 % more steel was issued than the drawings needed.
  • Each engineer uses their own consumption figures, so two sites cost the same work differently.

How it works

  1. A manager sets up BOMs under Construction > Projects > Planning > Materials > Bills of Materials. Give the work (M20 concrete), the group (Concrete) and the unit of work (m³). Add the norm or source, such as your own norm or a schedule of rates item.
  2. On the Per Unit of Work tab add the lines: materials with their quantity per unit, unit and wastage %. Add labour lines (mason-days) and plant lines (mixer hours) if you want them.
  3. A BOM with no project is a template for every project. Copy for a Project makes the project's own copy, so you can change the norm for one site without touching the template.
  4. On each BOQ item pick its BOM. Press Update Material Requirement on the BOQ, or make it final. Each item becomes a line of project work, with its quantity converted to the BOM's unit and its place kept.
  5. Or type project work by hand: a BOM, a quantity, a place and the date it is needed from.
  6. Open Material Requirement to see the net, wastage and needed quantity of each material, as a list or a pivot by material, place and month. A draft material request can be filled from it.

Everything it does

A BOM

  • Work, code, group, Per Unit of Work, Norm / Source, notes, Entity (empty for every Entity)
  • Lines: Material, Labour or Plant / Equipment; material or resource name, quantity per unit of work, unit, Wastage %
  • Rules: quantities above zero, wastage between 0 and 100 %, a material's unit of the same kind as the material
  • Templates (no project) and project copies, with the template it was copied from; filters Templates and Project Copies; group by group or project

Project work

  • A BOM times a quantity of work, at a place, with a description and Needed From
  • Made from the BOQ: one line per item with a BOM and a quantity. A BOQ item in a unit that does not convert to the BOM's unit is refused with a message
  • A newer BOQ version removes the work lines of earlier versions
  • Copy for a Project moves that project's work onto the copy

Material Requirement

  • Every work line times every BOM line: net, wastage and needed quantity
  • Filters Materials, Labour, Plant; group by project, material, place or month
  • List or pivot
  • Labour and plant lines show the mason-days or mixer hours the work needs

From requirement to site

  • Fill from the Requirement on a draft material request: what the place needs, up to the month it is needed by. Without a place it is the whole project. What is already requested is taken off
  • Material Reconciliation (Reporting): per project and material, needed, requested and issued, with the % issued; filter Issued More than Needed
  • With rate analysis (Growth), Fill from BOM builds a rate from the BOM's lines and the cost library

Who uses it

QSKeeps the BOM templates and names the BOM on each BOQ item.
Project managerMakes project copies where a site's norms differ, and updates the requirement after a BOQ change.
Storekeeper and purchasePlan orders from the material requirement by month.
Site engineerFills material requests from the requirement instead of guessing.

Where you use it

  • Web: Construction > Projects > Planning > Materials > Bills of Materials, Project Work and Material Requirement; Reporting > Material Reconciliation
  • Not in the SmartMy Construction app: material requests are raised in the app, the requirement is read on the web

What you control

Settings

  • BOM templates and project copies: none ship ready, you set up your own norms
  • Wastage % per material line: 0 to start with
  • Who can do what: site staff read; managers create, change and copy BOMs

Questions

Do you ship standard norms such as CPWD consumption figures?

Not yet. You enter your own BOMs once as templates, with the norm or source on each, and every project uses them or its own copy.

Does the requirement follow the schedule?

It follows the Needed From date on each work line, grouped by month. Lines made from the BOQ have no date until you set one.

What happens when the BOQ is revised?

Make the new version final or press Update Material Requirement. The work lines follow the new items and those of earlier versions are removed.

Can we see over-issue against the BOM?

Yes. Material Reconciliation shows needed, requested and issued per material, and a filter lists what was issued more than needed.

Which plan has it?

Every plan, Starter included.
