Automatic payments with a saved card or UPI AutoPay
Repeat orders and membership renewals are charged by themselves to a saved card or UPI AutoPay, through your own Razorpay or Stripe account. The buyer is told the amount and the date before each charge, and failed charges are tried again.

Why it matters
A subscription only pays if the money arrives without anyone chasing it. Asking buyers to pay a link every month loses some of them every month. In India, card and UPI mandates must also follow the RBI rules on limits and notice. SmartMy Website saves the buyer's card or UPI AutoPay mandate in your own Razorpay or Stripe account. It then charges each repeat order on its day. Before each charge the buyer gets the amount, the date and the method, 24 hours ahead by default. A failed charge is tried again after 1 and 3 days, and the money always goes straight to your account.
The problem it solves
- Every month you send payment links for repeat orders, and a share of buyers never pay them.
- Members forget to renew, and their access lapses in the middle of a course or a season.
- Card and UPI mandates in India need limits and a notice before each charge, and you are unsure how to stay within them.
- A failed payment is found only when the customer complains that nothing arrived.
How it works
- Switch it on for your Razorpay or Stripe account in the Shop tab > Payments: Automatic payments for subscriptions and memberships. Razorpay must turn Recurring Payments on for your account first.
- At checkout, a buyer of a subscription, or of a monthly or yearly membership, ticks Pay automatically each time. They choose a card or UPI AutoPay.
- Their first payment also authorises the mandate. SmartMy keeps only the gateway's customer and token ids, the card brand and last four digits, or the UPI handle.
- Before each repeat order or renewal, the order is made and the buyer gets the notice: the amount, the date and time, and the method.
- After the notice hours the order is charged off-session. Paid, it goes on like any paid order, and the membership runs on.
- If the charge fails, the buyer gets an email with a Pay now link and it is tried again after the retry days. After the last try the subscription pauses, or the membership ends on its date.
- The buyer turns automatic payment off, changes the method or skips the next charge from their subscription page or account page.
Everything it does
Ways to pay automatically
- Razorpay: a saved card, and UPI AutoPay for orders in Indian rupees
- Stripe: a saved card, in any currency your Stripe account takes
- Other gateways, UPI to your account and cash on delivery cannot charge automatically
- Used for subscribe-and-save orders and for monthly or yearly paid memberships
Limits and notice
- Largest automatic charge: 15,000 to start with; an order above it is not charged and the buyer pays by link
- With Razorpay, cards are capped at Rs 15,000 and UPI AutoPay at Rs 99,999
- Notice before each charge: 24 hours to start with; 0 charges at once
- The notice gives the amount, the date and time, the method and links to the order and to manage it
Failed charges
- Try again after (days): 1, 3 to start with
- A short outage at the gateway is tried again within the hour, for up to 3 days
- A charge with no answer from the gateway is checked every hour and given up after 4 days
- After the last try: the subscription pauses, or the membership ends on its date unless paid by link
Mandates
- Status: Waiting for the buyer, Active, Paused at the bank, Not set up, Turned off
- A mandate never authorised becomes Not set up after 7 days
- Changes at the bank (confirmed, rejected, paused, cancelled) arrive by webhook, or are asked for every hour
- Website > Shop > Orders > Saved Payment Methods lists them; Turn Off stops one
- Card numbers are never kept in SmartMy
The buyer's controls
- Subscription page: turn automatic payment off, set it up with a card or UPI AutoPay, skip the next charge
- Account page for members: Renews automatically with ..., Turn off automatic renewal, Change to ...
