Learning paths for onboarding and roles, with due dates

Put courses together into a path, such as onboarding for new sales staff, in order or in any order. People on the path are enrolled in each course as they reach it, with the path's due date.

Built and checked in code; not yet installed on a test system or used by a customer.

The problem it solves

  • New joiners get a list of ten courses and no idea which to start with.
  • Someone finishes the first course and nobody puts them on the next one.
  • You cannot tell how far each person is through the whole programme.

How it works

  1. A Learn Author opens Learn > Manage Courses > Courses > Learning Paths and presses New. Add a title, summary, cover and the courses.
  2. Choose Courses in Order to open each course after the one before. Set Days to Finish, and tick Open to Join for self-join.
  3. Press Publish; every course on the path must be published first.
  4. Press Enrol People and choose learners, or let them join from My Learning or Explore in the app.
  5. Each learner is enrolled in the first course, or in all of them when the path is in any order. When they finish one, the next follows.
  6. When every needed course is done, the path is finished and the learner is told.

Everything it does

The path

  • Title, Summary, Cover, Author, Entity
  • Courses in a set order, each Needed (on) or optional
  • Courses in Order: on to start with
  • Open to Join: off to start with
  • Days to Finish: 0 means no due date
  • Status: Draft, Published, Archived

Moving along

  • In order: the next course is enrolled when the one before is finished
  • Any order: every course is enrolled at once
  • Courses the learner already finished count straight away
  • Each course on the path gets the path's due date
  • Progress: share of needed courses finished; Courses Finished of Courses
  • Finished when every needed course is done

Following up

  • Learn > Manage Courses > Learning > Learners > Path Learners: each learner, status, progress and due date
  • Status per learner: Learning, Finished, Dropped
  • Each course's own enrolments, overdue flags and reminders still apply

Who uses it

Learn AuthorBuilds and publishes paths and enrols people; any author of the entity can change a path.
Learn ManagerDoes the same and archives old paths.
LearnerJoins open paths and works through the courses.

Where you use it

  • Web: Learn > Manage Courses > Courses > Learning Paths; Learning > Learners > Path Learners
  • Web: My Learning in the player shows the learner's paths
  • The SmartMy Learn app: paths on My Learning and Explore, with Join (built and in testing, not in the app stores yet)

What you control

Settings

  • Courses in Order: on; Open to Join: off; Days to Finish: 0, per path
  • Needed: on for each course added

Notifications

  • Course Assigned: to the learner for each course of the path as it is enrolled, by email and in the app
  • Learning Path Finished: to the learner, by email and in the app
  • Course Due Soon and Course Overdue for each course on the path
  • Every Learn event is a work message, so nobody can switch it off for themselves

Questions

Can each course on the path have its own deadline?

Not today. The path has one Days to Finish, and every course on it gets that due date.

Can new joiners be put on the onboarding path by themselves?

Not on the path itself. Put a New Joiners rule (with SmartMy HRMS) on the onboarding courses, or enrol each joiner on the path by hand.

What if someone already did one of the courses?

It counts at once. The path moves on to the next course they have not finished.

Can a course be on more than one path?

Yes. Finishing it moves the learner along every path it is on.
